  • Gum recession: Exposed root surfaces lack enamel entirely. Even minor gum recession can make teeth more sensitive to temperature changes, including heat
  • Cracked teeth: A crack in the tooth structure, even one not visible to the eye, can cause pressure and temperature to reach the nerve inside

Desensitising toothpaste may help reduce sensitivity for some people. These products typically contain compounds that block the microscopic channels in dentine, reducing nerve stimulation. Results vary depending on the underlying cause, and desensitising toothpaste is not appropriate for pain caused by pulp inflammation or decay.

Fluoride toothpaste supports enamel health by helping to remineralise early surface damage. Reducing carbonated drinks and acidic foods can also help slow enamel erosion. If teeth grinding is a factor, a dentist can discuss whether a night guard may be appropriate for your situation.

Good oral hygiene, including twice-daily brushing and daily interdental cleaning, remains the most consistent foundation for managing sensitivity long-term.

 

When Is Tooth Pain with Heat a Dental Emergency?

Not all tooth sensitivity requires urgent care, but some presentations do. When a toothache is accompanied by swelling, fever, or pain that does not ease, prompt attention is needed to prevent the problem from spreading to surrounding tissue.

  • Pain that lingers for more than 30 seconds after the heat source is removed
  • Spontaneous pain without any trigger
  • Swelling in the gum, jaw, or face
  • A visible crack, dark discolouration, or loose tooth
  • Fever or a feeling of general unwellness

These symptoms, in combination with heat sensitivity, may indicate that the nerve inside the tooth or the surrounding tissue requires treatment. A root canal procedure, when recommended, removes inflamed or infected nerve tissue and seals the tooth. It is a routine dental procedure and, depending on the extent of involvement, may be completed in one or two appointments.
